10 Essential Tools Every Baker Should Have

If you have just developed an affinity to baking and are planning to pursue it with a certain amount of consistency, there are some tools that are a must-have for every baker. Here is a list of some very basic and useful pieces of essential tools every baker should have:

#1 Baking Tins

You will find there is a wide variety of baking tins on the market these days, and they are available in different materials such as aluminium, silicone and heavy-duty non-stick varieties. It’s important to choose tins of the right size & shape, based on the cooking time and the recipe used.

#2 Cutters

Buy a good set of cutters – these will help you create artistic and simple cake decorations with the least amount of effort. These cutters can be used in making fun-shaped cookies and other baked goodies too.

#3 Cooling Rack

This is one of the most basic tools that a baker should have. It’s the best way to cool and avoid sogginess in freshly-baked cakes and biscuits.

#4 Dredger/Shaker

This is used for rolling out either icing or dough. However, you also have the option to use a sieve or strainer for the purpose.

#5 Food Processor

This can be used for baking savoury and sweet items and is excellent for mixing the fat into the flour you use for baking when your recipe calls for any pastry-making.

#6 Icing Smoother

This is a very good tool for cake decorating; the smoother is a great way to give your creations a professional finish. You can use this to smooth down the sugarpaste/marzipan icing once you are done with applying it on your cake. This tool is something you will easily find at any specialist cake decorating shop.

#7 Greaseproof Paper

This paper is excellent for wrapping any type of fatty or greasy foods. It’s ideal for wrapping fruit cake before you place it in the tin; and its oven, freezer and microwave-proof too. When you use it as cake tin lining, grease the paper lightly before you spoon the cake mix into the tin.

#8 Measuring Spoons and Cups

It’s not uncommon for people to either overestimate or underestimate the actual size of a tablespoon or a teaspoon. When you use measuring spoons, it helps you get the accurate amount of ingredients; it’s also a good idea to buy a set of measuring cups.

#9 Marzipan Spacers

If you are going to be doing a lot of cake decorating using sugarpaste/marzipan, you should use spacers. These will help you achieve a very even thickness. You can buy these from a cake decorating supplies store.

#10 Mixing bowls

It’s a good idea to buy at least 2 large mixing bowls and you will find that most recipes call for more than one. You can buy ones made of plastic, metal or glass; however, it’s a smart choice to buy ones that are heatproof as these can be put over simmering water or in the microwave when the recipe requires you to do so.

Aside from these tools, it’s also a good idea to have a measuring jug, palette knife, pastry brushes, sieves, a rolling pin, skewers, scales, baking parchment, and a zester. The other things you might want to consider purchasing are a sturdy whisk and a couple of spatulas of different sizes.
