The Best Way To Bake Apples

Baking cake or pies are common, but not many try to bake apples. Do you know that baked apples make a yummy and nutritious dessert? Its aroma fills the house and brings everyone running to the kitchen to find out what’s cooking. Fall harvest season apples are excellent for baking a delicious treat for family and friends. Bake apples to retain their optimal flavour.

Ingredients For Baked Apples – With Brown Sugar and Cinnamon

This basic baked apple recipe makes two servings; you will need:

  • Small red baking apples – 2
  • Apple juice/apple cider – 1/4 cup
  • Brown sugar – 2 tablespoons
  • Ground cinnamon – A small pinch
  • Walnuts or pecans, coarsely chopped – 2 tablespoons
  • For garnishing – a stick of cinnamon (To remove before serving – do not eat)

TIP: A baked apple recipe needs apples that hold up best during cooking. Opt for apple varieties such as Granny Smith, Sundowner, Braeburn, Jonathan, Jonagold, or Pink Lady, during your visit to the supermarket or farmer’s market.


Baking Equipment

To bake the apples, use a baking dish. You can use 6-ounce custard cups as well.

The Process of Baking Apples

Step 1: Coring the Apples before Baking

If you want apple pieces, start slicing the apple from the stem. If you want a whole apple, then use an apple corer or a melon baller to remove the core. Make sure that the base of the apple is kept intact to hold the filling. Now peel a strip around the top of the apple. You can also cut a thin slice from the bottom of the apple to create a flat base so that it doesn’t topple when placed in a dish.

Step 2: Set Apples in a Baking Dish or Small Custard Cups

Arrange the cored apples in the baking dish or the custard cups as per your choice. The apples will sit properly as you have removed a thin slice from the bottom. If you have opted to bake your apples in the custard cups, keep the custard cups in a baking dish. You will generally use two custard cups for this recipe.

Step 3: Putting the Mixture into the Apples

Now is the time to prepare the filling. Take a small bowl and put walnuts, brown sugar and cinnamon. Add apple juice and a dash of cinnamon to this mixture. Fill this mixture into the two cups equally.

If you are using full apples as mentioned above, fill a mixture of your liking into the center of the two apples. Pour any juice like apple, orange, or even water around the apple to help soak up flavor during the baking process.

Step 4: Baking the Filled Apples

Now is the time to bake the ready apples in an oven at 175 degrees C. The baking time is 30 to 40 minutes or until the apples become tender. Do not forget to sprinkle some juice or water on and around the apples in the baking dish intermittently.

Cool a little. Serve the baked flavorful apple dessert with a dollop of ice cream of your choice.
