While baking great cupcakes takes effort, some skill and practice, decorating them in unique ways will determine whether these goodies elicit the wow response you expect from guests. The decoration you place on top of your delicious cupcakes is what will initially grab the attention of the people you are serving them to.
There are a number of complex toppings that you can use to decorate your cupcakes. However, it’s best to stick to simple yet attractive toppings that will instantly uplift their appearance. Not only will you be able to achieve the effect you want on your creations, but will also end up saving a considerable amount of time in the process. Here are some superb yet amazingly simple cupcake decorating ideas:
This is a very simple & quick cupcake topping that still adds a lot of character to your creations. Place jelly beans, pieces of larger chocolate bars or slice up chocolate cups and place the slices at an angle on the cakes, giving a classic shabby look to them.
#2 Printed tags and flags
Tags are easy and cute and they are customisable for a special event too. Just download and print some tags off the internet and cut around the shapes. Tape them to toothpicks of different colours and then simply stick them into the cupcake for an artsy and whimsical feel.
#3 Bittersweet chocolate drawings
Use bittersweet chocolate or white chocolate chips – boil them in a double boiler. Pour the mix into a round-tipped piping bag and pipe out the designs onto wax paper. Allow the chocolate to set and then add some coloured sprinkles to the drawing. Allow these to cool for a few hours on the counter or pop them into the fridge if you are in a hurry. Peel them off the wax paper and use them to decorate your cupcakes.
#4 Fresh fruit slices
Fresh fruit is a great way to jazz up cupcakes. Pipe some fresh whipped cream to the top of the cakes and then place small slices of strawberries, kiwi fruit or even blueberries and raspberries (depending on which fruits are in season and you can acquire easily). Most kinds of berries are great and you can garnish lemony cupcakes with citrus fruits too. It’s best to place the fruit just before you’re ready to serve the cupcakes, as the juice from the slices can seep into the cakes, making them soggy and mushy.
This is an excellent choice if you have to decorate a larger number of cupcakes. Make a basic ganache by bringing 1/4th cup milk to a boil. Remove it from the heat and then pour it over a cupful of chocolate chips (room temperature). If you want a mint ganache, you can add a few drops of mint extract or even make a butterscotch ganache if you like.
Stir the mixture well, until all the chocolate has melted and you have a smooth, thick sauce. You can pour the ganache over the cupcakes with a spoon or simply dip the tops of your cakes right into the mixture. Don’t worry if it looks a little messy, the dripping effect will give the cupcakes a unique and attractive look.
